CH138 Ideas and Icons: Byzantine Spirituality

from 600.00

A comprehensive introduction to the history and ethos of the Orthodox Church, from its Biblical and Apostolic roots, through its definitive formulations in the fourth century, to the present day, including its relations with Anglicanism and the Episcopal Church. We shall read and discuss such classic theologians and mystics as Maximus the Confessor, Gregory Palamas, John Climacus, and Symeon the New Theologian; we shall explore the fully developed art of the Icon in its Orthodox fullness; and we shall examine the unique Orthodox understanding of the relationship between Liturgical and personal prayer and meditation.
